Who we are, What we do, and Why we're here:
Special People was formed in 1998 by a teacher who has a child with special needs, in response to the difficulties she experienced in finding appropriate, high quality childcare.
Special People works exclusively with children and young adults with a wide variety of special needs. We have staff experienced in working with children who have nursing needs, who present challenging behaviours, who require specific input such as physiotherapy or speech and language therapy or who are merely in need of stimulation.
Special People believes that children and adults with and without disabilities should enjoy an equal place in an inclusive environment. We believe that everyone should be enabled to interact, drawing strength from each others’ differences and similarities. We believe that the users of education, social and health services need to be given every opportunity to communicate to ensure their participation in decision-making.
Special People is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
Special People company policies are available for download.
Aims and Objectives
• To provide support and information to both the children and their parents/carers
• To help each child reach their full potential
• To match an appropriately qualified support worker with the needs of the individual child
• To provide a safe, fun and stimulating environment for children in our care
Special People staff work predominantly in the home environment, providing respite care and support to children and young adults with special needs and their families or foster carers, although we also support children in the classroom, at respite centres and in hospitals.
We work with clients from varying religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Special People employs a mix of male and female, full and part-time staff. Our staff come from 20 different ethnic backgrounds and speak 18 languages, although clear spoken English is essential.
We provide support workers, therapists and teachers for local authorities’ social services and education departments, NHS trusts and independent and state sector schools, colleges and nurseries. We also offer respite, baby-sitting and nannying services to private clients.
